A Three-going-on-Four Centuries Walking Tour of Onancock in Four Blocks

As part of the special Regatta Weekend events, Dr. Brooks Miles Barnes and Anne Nock conducted the walking tours during the 1999 Onancock's Regatta Weekend.  A layered history of Onancock was told using some of the town's historic buildings as full-size audio-visuals.  Beginning at the town wharf and concluding with a slide presentation and tour of Kerr Place, participants viewed the interiors of Holden House, the Duncan House, the Harmanson House (shown above), the Quinby House, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church(shown right).

The walking tour was open to forty visitors and/or residents in two groups of twenty.  Tickets were obtained at historic Kerr Place in Onancock (home of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society), telephone 757 787-8012.

For centuries, the town of Onancock has welcomed boaters year-round from the waters of the great Chesapeake Bay to its naturally-protected, deep water harbor.  In this tradition, on the weekend of September 10, the Onancock Business and Civic Association, in cooperation with Onancock's Mayor and Town Council, welcomed boaters and land passengers alike to Onancock Town and Onancock Creek for a town-wide festival celebrating its fortuitous location on an arm of the Chesapeake  Bay.

The Duncan House (shown right) and the Quinby House (shown below left), like all of the homes shown here, are examples of a labor of love by their owners.  They are an example of the pride of Onancock residents.  What makes Onancock special is its people, they take pride in their community as they have done for centuries. From the from-heres who were born here to the come-heres who make Onancock their home, most residents are community-oriented. They all take pride in the town's Chesapeake Bay Heritage; thus enhancing its quality of life.

As quoted by an Eastern Shore resident, "The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a unique place to visit, a great place to vacation, and a wonderful place to live."  Onancock is known as The Gem of the Eastern Shore.

Historic Holden House (right) is another example of Onancock's tradition.  During the visit to Onancock during its regatta weekend, many took time time out to participate in  the "Historic Home Tours".
