| Prior
to the Civil War, two young men on Chincoteague Island pooled their resources
and built a large Maryland "T" -shaped house on Main Street. One was Dr.
Nathaniel Smith, who treated Union troops here during the war, and the
other was Joseph Kenny, who served the Island as Postmaster.
