I made my first trip to Tangier Island in August of this year, 2004. Have been meaning to go for sometime. I was not disappointed.After having been stationed on a small island while in the Air Force, Okinawa, I swore I would never set foot on another. I gave in
and am glad I did.It was like being back in the '20s. And I wasn't born until the 30s. The food was great, better than great, the people were more
friendly than I was told. Can't wait to go back.

from Balto. you step back in time at a much slower pase in Tangier.

Subject: Guestbook...As a former "Pruitt" with family roots in Virginia, I have always been fascinated by Tangier Island. During a recent visit to Virginia's Eastern Shore, I was privileged to meet a "Crockett" from Tangier in the lovely seaside village of Cape Charles. This young man was warm and friendly and I considered it an honor to be "related" to him. I was not able to make the trip from Onancock to Tangier, but I did 'look' in that direction and hope to be able to make the trip someday. Thanks for the interesting information on the History of Tangier Island. (Interestingly enough my paternal Grandmother was a Thomas! I'll have to dig into this....I also have a Pruitt ancestor who settled on the neck of the New Poquoson River in 1636...)
Mary HorromI had the opportunity to visit the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Tangier Island this summer. It was the best vacation I've had in years. We meandered throughout the backroads of the Eastern Shore visiting Chincoteague, Onancock, Wachapreague, Eastville, and Cape Charles. We have a diversified family of all ages and everyone enjoyed their time on the Eastern Shore and Tangier.

we love it. its like our home. everyone is so friendly, the town is so quaint and even the post office people like rick and mike are just wonderful and go out of their way to make you feel like one big family. the restaurants are wonderful and you have so many choices of fine seafood restaurants. theres boat ramps and camps and so many quaint and beautiful houses in onancock. we just fell in love with it the first year we visited it and have since came there for the last seven summers. if you dont go to Onancock, you have missed a rare treat of beauty and down home friendlynist. its just a wonderful little town and we love it.g and w raul

Born in Onancock,Va 1926. In the summers of the 30's I use to spend time on the island with Capt. Pete Williams. I can't get over how the island has not changed. Hi, We have flown into Tangier twice, and took the boat over once. What a wonderful time we had. Especially the evening we chased the sun to catch the beautiful sunsets that are a natural part of Tangier. We look forward to more visits. My finace' and I just went there over the weekend and spent the night at Shirley's Bay View Inn and I must say that it was the most interesting and beautiful Island I have seen in a while. It is great relaxation and Shirley cooks a great and delicious breakfast. Wallace was a very funny guy and we learned alot from him. We are actually thinking of getting married on the island next year and would have the wedding at no other place than Shirley's! Crossing the Chesapeake Bay on the bridge tunnel is a fascinating journey and a credit to men's ingenuity. The Delmarva peninsula is astonishgly beautiful and pristine for being so close to major cities. The trees are glorious, it is Eden for those who love the land in its natural beauty. Too bad so many of the old houses have been allowed to go to seed for they are part of America's historical heritage, whether in Virginia Maryland or Delaware. Work to keep it beautiful so that our children and grandchildren may understand what the land was like before it was destroyed by our desire to cover it with ugly buildings, shopping centres, industrial complexes etc.without any thought of trying to architect our lives and surroundings to live peacably and integrally next to the beauty that God has wrought. Your island sounds enchanting. I have heard about it before and I also am reading the P. Cornwell book Isle of Dogs that features Tangier. She paints a rather negative picture of the natives of the Island in that they talk funny and are not very intelligent and suspicious of mainlanders. What part of her portrayal is true and what is false and how due the Tangierians feel about her book.

Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. Our accommodations in Onancock and on Tangier Island were the best, many thanks to Colonial Manor Inn Bed and Breakfast, 76 Market Street Bed and Breakfast in Onancock and Shirley's Bay View Inn on Tangier Island.

I've just been reading about Tangier Island in a book by Jim Keeble called "Independence Day". He mentions the Patricia Cornwell book but she sounds rather dismissive of your people and your way of life. Keeble is more understanding and there is much to be admired in a people deciding they want to stay as they are.

My husband and I are of Hispanic decent and even though we can't live on our Island for economic reasons we long for it. Your Web site is very much like the part of Puerto Rico that we come from on the southern coast of the Island. My stepfather was a fisherman by trade and all my mother's family so I know how much hard work it takes to maintain a fishing village. My father's family owns the first seafood restaurant to open on the southern shore. I would soo! much love to visit your Island with my husband for our 36th anniversary. He loves fishing with our 3 sons and it would be the ultimate gift I could give him. I am however, a little fearful of how we would be treated and how hospitable you are to Non-Anglos, afterall, I wouldn't want our anniversary to turn into a nightmare. Please be honest and let us know what we can expect. My husband will retire in another 5 years and we would like to look into moving to Norfolk Virginia but, we would like to vacation there first to see how we like it.
