The second in the
Fall Series, “Antonia’s Line (Netherlands)” is the 1945 story of a ruggedly
regal woman who returns to the backwater village of her birth with her
daughter. Over five decades and several generations, a quiet but profound
revolution takes place as Antonia’s farm becomes the center of a matriarchal
utopia based on tolerance and common sense.

Based on a true story, this moving film centers on a man condemned to life as a quadriplegic after a tragic accident. Determined to die with dignity, he leads a 30-year campaign to win the right to end his life. While certainly a thought-provoking controversial movie dealing with the right to die being a personal or institutional choice, the film is beautifully done and viewers come to admire and love the characters despite their views. A touching film that centers on two completely opposite men who are facing death; one has a quiet existence, the other a life of danger. They meet by chance a few days before each of them must gamble with their lives and develop a friendship as they ponder what would have happened had they taken the other’s path. The ending is beautifully scripted and filmed and will provide different meanings to different people. December 9, 2006
